Google condemned by the CNIL

On March 17, 2011, the French Data Protection Authority (« Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés ») has condemned Google Inc. to a 100 000 euros fine for violation of the 1978 Law relating to Information Technology, Files and Liberty (« loi relative à l’informatique, aux fichiers et aux libertés ») amended by Law n°2004-801 of August, 5, 2004.

The Authority made a series of controls concerning data retained by Google in the implementation of Google Maps, Street View and Latitude services. Several breaches such as the collection and retention of data (identifiers, passwords, connection data, e-mail) from WiFi sources, without the consent of the concerned users, were revealed and lead the Authority to enjoin Google in May 2010 to put an end to these proceedings. However, Google did not respond to these requests in the appropriate deadline leading the Authority, on March, 17, to condemn Google to a 100 000 euros fine.
